Extracting value from refinery residues is a top priority for refiners, globally, while being compliant in a stringent regulatory atmosphere, as best reflected in the IMO’s 2020 sulfur cap on bunker fuels.
While long residues or vacuum tower bottoms (VR or VTB) can be hydrotreated, short residues are usually converted using thermal processes, such as thermal cracking and delayed coking. However, the products from these processes need further processing to achieve transportation fuel quality products, adding to the cost of the resid upgrading schemes.
KBR’s ROSE technology is the market leading Solvent deasphalting (SDA) technology that can be combined with FCC and/or hydrocracking and has been commercially proven to meet the need for higher yields of high-quality transportation fuels at comparable operating costs and complexity of operations.
We will present schemes using combination of ROSE with hydrocracking and an integrated solidification system which result in higher overall margin than other resid upgrading options. We will discuss economic and operating benefits of other bottom-of-the barrel schemes and commercial examples (i.e. debottleneck VDU and/or synergize with cokers), where applicable.

Companies struggle with operating more complex plants with fewer people responsible for more tasks. Operators run mission critical processes across multi-billion dollar businesses where missteps can be very costly in terms of safety and profitability. To increase confidence under various operating scenarios, Shell trains its operators and control system engineers on high fidelity training simulators. These simulators are based on first principle models of refinery processes and can be used to test control strategies, reduce start-up, and optimize training. Earl Wallace, Shell Canada Scotsford, will share his experiences with implementing this technology to drive operational excellence through long-term training strategies.

How can your process benefit from using a centrifugal machine, or a few of them in the same cycle? Considering how flexible today’s gas processing plants have to be to accommodate changing demand, it’s essential for rotating equipment to share that flexibility. Join Atlas Copco Gas and Process as they discuss the benefits of turboexpanders and integrally geared compressors used in the hydrocarbon industries. You’ll learn about how these technologies can be further optimized to offer maximum flexibility with minimal CAPEX due to the modularity, high efficiency and superior reliability that the design of these machines provides.
Key learning objectives:
• Understand the features of centrifugal propane refrigeration compressors
• Compare integral-gear technology with other types of compressors and analyze its impact on process flexibility, efficiency and risks
• Learn how integrally geared turbocompressors can fit into your gas plant process
• See mechanisms of turboexpander optimization and what it can bring to your process.

Over the past several years, the world has witnessed significant downstream capacity growth in all sectors of the downstream hydrocarbon processing industry (HPI). To satisfy increasing demand for refined fuels, petrochemicals and natural gas, every region is investing to increase downstream processing capacity. Although the Asia-Pacific, Middle East and US regions will be the leaders in capacity growth, other regions have announced capital-intensive projects to meet future demand. With more than $1.8 T in announced projects globally, it is imperative that HPI companies receive the most up-to-date and valid information on market trends, and the future development of the downstream processing industry.
During this live webcast, Lee Nichols will provide comprehensive detail on capital projects around the world, as well as major economic, environmental and political market trends that are shaping and influencing the industry in the near-term.
