Sorama launches world’s first fixed acoustic monitor certified for ATEX/IECEx Zone 1 areas

  • DEKRA-certified L642Ex detects and localises gas leaks, mechanical anomalies and partial discharge in high-risk industrial environments

Sorama announced the launch of the Sorama L642Ex, a fixed acoustic monitor for use in ATEX/IECEx Zone 1 areas.

Certified by DEKRA on 3 April 2026, the Sorama L642Ex is designed for environments where explosive atmospheres may occur during normal operation. It provides continuous acoustic insight into safety-critical assets that are often difficult to access, helping industrial operators to improve safety, reliability and uptime.

The system detects and localizes gas leaks, mechanical anomalies and partial discharge activity by converting acoustic signals into actionable data. This enables industrial teams to identify early indicators of risk before they develop into larger safety or operational issues.

For industries such as oil and gas, chemical processing, energy, heavy industry and infrastructure, inspections in hazardous areas often rely on scheduled rounds, temporary measurements or manual access. The Sorama L642Ex addresses this challenge by providing continuous acoustic monitoring in ATEX/IECEx Zone 1 environments, to add a permanent monitoring layer. The system can be either mounted directly onto assets or integrated with suitable robotic inspection platforms, creating a permanent monitoring layer that extends asset visibility while supporting safer, more efficient inspection operations.

One such platform is ExRobotics' ExR-2.5 – currently the only UL and ATEX/IECEx Zone 1 Certified inspection robot designed for potentially explosive environments such as oil & gas platforms and refineries.

By combining certified autonomous inspection with advanced acoustic monitoring, operators can gain more frequent insight into asset condition, identify issues earlier and make better-informed maintenance decisions without disrupting operations.
