Marathon finishes new Kentucky refinery splitter

Marathon Petroleum expects to start up a new 35-Mbpd condensate splitter at its Kentucky refinery in May, according to CEO Gary Heminger, who announced the news at the IHS CERAweek conference in Houston.

The new unit, which will split the ultralight crude into naphtha and other feedstocks at the company's 242-Mbpd refinery in Catlettsburg, Kentucky, is in the last stages of construction.

Marathon also started up a 25-Mbpd splitter at its 80-Mbpd Canton, Ohio refinery in December 2014.

Heminger said it was running above capacity but did not specify by how much.

The IHS CERAWeek conference continues through Friday at the Hilton Americas in downtown Houston.
