Rhodia, Cobalt to build bio-butanol plant in Brazil
The announcement is another step by the two companies toward the construction of commercial-scale bio-refineries using Cobalt's technology to convert Brazilian bagasse and other local non-food feedstock into bio n-butanol in Latin America. Financial terms were not disclosed.
Amyris, Total to align on renewable diesel, jet fuel
Total dedicated an $82 million funding budget over the next three years exclusively for the deployment of Biofene, Amyris's renewable farnesene, for production of renewable diesel and jet fuel. Under Tuesday’s announcement, Total agreed to fund $30 million during the third quarter of 2012.
Smithfield CEO calls for US to cut ethanol mandate
In addition to a temporary waiver of the mandate, Congress should pass a bill that would lower the federal Renewable Fuels Standard when US corn supplies fall below a certain threshold, Smithfield CEO C. Larry Pope wrote. A waiver would ease requirements that refiners blend ethanol with gasoline.
Celanese, Pertamina to collaborate on fuel ethanol projects in Indonesia
In line with a long-term strategy to develop new and renewable energy sources, Pertamina will collaborate exclusively with Celanese to jointly develop synthetic fuel ethanol projects in Indonesia utilizing Celanese’s proprietary TCX ethanol process technology. Production could begin in about 30 months.
BP to commission delayed UK biorefinery this year
The construction of the biorefinery, one of the world's largest, was due to be completed by late spring. The delays are due to BP ensuring it is "dotting every i and crossing every t," said Phillip New, BP Biofuels CEO.
Codexis eyes biofuel technology license from Shell
Under the agreement, Shell has agreed to negotiate exclusively with Codexis through September 1 on the terms of a new agreement under which Shell would grant certain rights and licenses in the biofuels field to develop and sell cellulase enzymes to third parties on a worldwide basis, except Brazil.
EPA to make 'necessary' US biofuel credit changes
The comments from EPA officials, made in prepared testimony for a House hearing, were the agency's first public commitment to make changes to the program. Oil refiners, which are required to buy the credits, have faced millions in fines and added costs as a result of buying phony credits.
BP targets wind, biofuels within alternative energy
Katrina Landis, CEO of BP's alternative energy business, said at a gathering of the Atlantic Council in Washington that the company is ahead of schedule in its investment plans. BP projects biofuels will make up 30% of the gasoline pool by 2030 and sees cellulosic ethanol as the energy to watch.

The deal also anticipates commercialization of the technology upon project success, which could enable renewably-sourced, competitively-priced jet fuel as well as other chemicals and fuels made from isobutanol.
DuPont picks KBR for engineering contract on Iowa cellulosic ethanol project
KBR will provide front-end engineering, detailed engineering and procurement services to DuPont’s industrial biosciences group for the plant to be constructed in the Midwest US. The ethanol facility is designed to process 1,300 tpd of corn stover and produce 27.5 million gal/year of ethanol.
