Ineos to shut polystyrene facility in Illinois (U.S.) by the end of the year

Ineos Styrolution will permanently shut down its polystyrene (PS) production facility in Channahon, Illinois, by the end of 2026, citing ongoing margin pressure, industry oversupply, and unfavorable market conditions. The plant, which employs about 100 people and has an annual production capacity of 400,000 metric tons, has operated since 1960.

The company said a detailed review of market conditions, utilization rates, operating costs, and long-term business prospects determined that continued operations at the site were no longer economically viable. Following the closure, North American PS production will be consolidated at Ineos Styrolution’s remaining facilities in Decatur, Alabama, and Altamira, Mexico.

Despite the shutdown, Ineos Styrolution reaffirmed its commitment to the polystyrene market, including its recycled-content ECO product line, emphasizing the material’s recyclability, versatility, and role in supporting circular economy solutions. The company stated that the closure reflects broader industry challenges rather than the performance of the Channahon workforce.
