Jordan commits $1 B to launch first green ammonia export hub in Aqaba
Jordan has taken a major step toward establishing itself as a regional clean energy powerhouse after signing a $1-B agreement to build the country’s first large-scale green ammonia production facility. The landmark investment, backed by a consortium of Polish and Emirati developers alongside Dutch engineering specialists, signals Jordan’s official entrance into the rapidly expanding global hydrogen sector and reinforces its long-term strategy for low-carbon industrial growth.
The planned facility will be constructed near the port city of Aqaba and designed as a fully integrated, off-grid operation. The project will rely on a dedicated 550-MW solar power installation supported by battery energy storage technology, enabling the plant to operate independently from Jordan’s national electricity network. Through water electrolysis powered by renewable energy, the facility will generate hydrogen without relying on conventional fossil fuel-intensive production methods, ultimately producing up to 100,000 tpy of green ammonia for export markets across Europe and Asia.
Jordanian Prime Minister Jafar Hassan oversaw the signing ceremony, underscoring the government’s strong commitment to advancing the Kingdom’s energy transition agenda. Energy Minister Saleh Kharabsheh described the initiative as a transformative milestone for Jordan’s energy industry, adding that the project is expected to reduce carbon emissions by roughly 200,000 tpy.
Officials also view the investment as a sign of growing international confidence in Jordan’s updated regulatory environment, which has been refined to attract sustainable and environmentally focused capital amid rising regional competition for green energy projects.
The project is expected to reach financial close by September 2027, with commercial operations targeted for November 2030. In addition to producing low-carbon fuel for international markets, the development is anticipated to drive technology transfer, strengthen Jordan’s renewable energy expertise, and create highly skilled employment opportunities throughout the construction and operational phases.
