Dialogue with the trade union movement must focus on business sustainability, says the UK Chemical Industries Association (CIA), which has a membership of 200 companies. "International dialogue between employers and trade unions in the truly global chemical industry is to be welcomed provided it is based around the sustainability of the enterprise," says Dr. Anil Kumar, one of CIA's directors. Speaking recently in Vienna, Austria, at a global conference of chemical employers, he suggested that "employers may be more willing to listen to unions if there is a wider understanding and appreciation that employment comes from successful enterprises."
