HP Reliability: How do you size expansion chambers (assuming it is needed)

Hydrocarbon Processing Staff: Bloch, Heinz P.

Expansion chambers (Fig. 1) are designed to restrict pressure increase in closed volumes. From basic physics, we, of course, know that the pressure in a closed volume increases as temperature goes up...

Deferred maintenance causes upsurge in pump failures

Not addressing the root cause of a failure puts resources and employees at risk

HP Reliability: Consider ‘water washing’ for steam turbines

Hydrocarbon Processing Staff: Bloch, Heinz P.
Elliott Group: Dowson, P.

Occasions may arise when deposits form on the internal parts of steam turbines. The accumulation of these deposits may be indicated by a gradual increase in stage pressures over time with no evidence ..

HP Reliability: Tutors can provide answers

Hydrocarbon Processing Staff: Bloch, Heinz P.

As you read this column, much additional data on the nuclear disaster on the east coast of Japan’s main island will have become available. But, the terms safety and reliability will still be on o..
