Stockholm Exergi taps Inprocess to deliver advanced process simulator for BECCS project

Inprocess, a leading provider of advanced process simulation solutions for the energy and process industries, is proud to announce that it has been awarded the contract to develop and deliver the Operator Training Simulator (OTS) for Stockholm Exergi’s Bio-Energy with Carbon Capture and Storage (BECCS) project at the biofuel-fired combined heat and power (CHP) plant at Värtaverket in Stockholm.

Stockholm Exergi is Stockholm’s energy company, operating the region’s district heating and cooling network and supplying electricity to the metropolitan area. Today, the company provides energy services to more than 800,000 residents and approximately 400 critical locations—hospitals, data centers, public facilities, and private clients—through a network connected to their heating and cogeneration assets.

These facilities efficiently transform residual heat, biofuels, and non-recyclable waste into energy for the community. Stockholm Exergi is building one of the world's largest facilities for removing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, Beccs Stockholm. The facility is currently under construction in the Energy Harbour, Stockholm. When ready in 2028, it will capture up to 800,000 tons of carbon dioxide per year – more than the total annual emissions from road traffic in Stockholm, from the biogenic flue gases of the already existing combined heat and power plant. This marks a significant step in the transition towards an energy supply with net-zero emissions.

The captured carbon dioxide will be liquefied before shipped to permanent geological storage outside the coast of Norway. Permanent carbon removals are complementary to fossil emissions reductions in fighting global warming, and necessary for reaching Net Zero. Beccs Stockholm is funded by sales of permanent Carbon Removal Certificates to corporations in combination with a grant from the European Innovation Fund and Swedish state aid.

As a critical component in ensuring safe, reliable, and efficient plant operation, Stockholm Exergi has selected Inprocess to deliver a full-scope Process and Operator Training Simulator. The OTS will support the:

  • Validation of the BECCS process design
  • Verification of the plant’s Distributed Control System – DCS (Siemens Energy SPPA-T3000)
  • Support for design modifications and operational optimization
  • Comprehensive plant operators training prior to plant commissioning

The process simulator solution delivered by Inprocess will include:

  • A high-fidelity dynamic model of the full BECCS process
  • A dedicated process simulation platform with orchestration tools (start/stop, snapshots, disturbances, etc.)
  • A full Soft DCS replica of the SPPA-T3000 control system
  • OPC-based communication architecture
  • Hardware setup with instructor station and scalable operator training workstations

The OTS will be commissioned in Q2 2027, supporting Stockholm Exergi in preparing operations personnel and validating process behavior well ahead of initial operations. “We are honored to contribute our simulation expertise to one of Europe’s most ambitious climate-positive energy projects,” said [Oriol Millan,CEO] at Inprocess. “Stockholm Exergi’s BECCS initiative sets a global benchmark in carbon removal, and we are proud that our technology will play a key role in ensuring its operational excellence.”

This award reinforces Inprocess’ leadership in delivering state-of-the-art digital training and engineering process simulators for the global energy transition and carbon-management industries
