Brazil's BNDES approves $71 MM for carbon storage project

Brazilian state development bank BNDES has approved financing for corn ethanol producer FS to build the country's first carbon capture and storage (CCS) facility at its plant in Mato Grosso state.

BY THE NUMBERS:

  • BNDES has approved 384.3 MM reais ($71.15 MM) in funding to help build the facility.
  • FS wants to eliminate 100% of the emissions from the plant in Mato Grosso's Lucas do Rio Verde, roughly 423,000 metric tpy.

KEY CONTEXT:

  • Brazil is a major ethanol producer, and corn ethanol output is growing rapidly.
  • According to corn ethanol association UNEM, corn ethanol represents 23% of current ethanol production in Brazil.
  • UNEM expects corn to account for 40% of ethanol's feedstock in Brazil over the next decade.

THE DETAILS:

  • The project will use bioenergy with carbon capture and storage (BECCS) technology to compress and inject carbon dioxide deep underground in saline reservoirs of the Parecis Basin.
  • BNDES President Aloizio Mercadante said the financing aligns with Brazil's energy transition goals and its Paris Agreement commitments to cut greenhouse gas emissions.
