Venezuela's biggest refinery suffering power outage since Sept. 12
Venezuela's Amuay refinery, the country's largest, is almost completely offline following a power outage last week, four sources familiar with the matter said this week.
The power interruption left the refinery's catalytic cracker, which produces finished fuels, offline and halted operations of two distillation units, sources said.
"Yes, the refinery has stopped. It was an electrical failure, a blackout in Amuay," a worker at the facility said, adding that the outage took place on Sept. 12.
Sources said the crude processing units were in the process of re-starting on Monday, a task that typically takes several days.
Power outages frequently affect Venezuelan refineries due to a chronic lack of investment, suspending operations and leading to fuel shortages.
Amuay has a capacity to process 645,000 bpd of oil. Venezuela's state-owned energy company PDVSA did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
