Motiva continues repairs on Texas FCC (U.S.)

Motiva Enterprises was continuing repairs to the shut gasoline-producing fluidic catalytic cracker (FCC) at its 626,000-bpd Port Arthur, Texas refinery on Wednesday. Motiva hopes to restart the 81,000-bpd FCC this week, the sources said.

A Motiva spokesperson did not reply to a request for comment on Wednesday night.

Motiva put off a restart planned for Tuesday after additional leaks developed on the unit, the sources said.

The FCC was shut on July 24 because of a leak on the unit’s heavy naphtha line, the sources said. Motiva planned to attempt a restart on Saturday, which was moved to Tuesday to complete repair of the initial leak.

Motiva plans to replace up to five valves on the FCC before attempting the restart, the sources said.

FCCs use a fine powder catalyst to convert gas oil to unfinished gasoline.

Motiva’s Port Arthur refinery is the second largest in the United States, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration.
