Mammoet successfully transports/installs record-breaking hydrocracker for ORLEN Lietuva refinery
The ORLEN Lietuva refinery in Mažeikiai, Lithuania, entrusted Mammoet with the transportation and installation of a massive residue hydrocracking unit (RHCU), weighing 1,500 t and standing over 50 m tall.
Mammoet, with its extensive experience and prior collaboration with ORLEN Lietuva, meticulously planned the project starting in 2016. Despite challenges such as adverse weather and complex logistics, Mammoet successfully transported the RHCU by road over a 145-km route. The reactor was transported using 88 axle lines of PST and conventional trailer, pulled by two prime movers.
The journey took around 17 days, with the convoy travelling at an average speed of 3 km/hr - 5 km/hr with movements mostly at night. This was to avoid damaging the asphalt in the summer heat and to minimize disruption for traffic and the public.
Installation, carried out with precision using advanced crane technology, was completed within 7 hr, setting records as the heaviest load ever transported in Lithuania and marking the first use of a gantry crane for a lift in the country.
The project not only demonstrated Mammoet's expertise but also contributed significantly to Lithuania's energy infrastructure and garnered appreciation from stakeholders.
