Four injured after fire at ExxonMobil refinery in Baytown, Texas

Early Thursday morning, an explosion took place inside the Baytown, Texas 584,000 bpd ExxonMobil refinery, injuring four people.

There were no fatalities and those injured were in stable condition and receiving medical treatment. Other personnel were accounted for, Exxon said.

Three of the four injured were taken for treatment by helicopter and one by ambulance.

The fire had been put out by roughly 10 a.m. EST (1500 GMT), several hours after the blaze erupted.

People familiar with plant operations told Reuters that the fire occurred in a hydrotreater unit at the refinery that had been shut on Wednesday due to a bypass line leak. Hydrotreaters remove sulfur and other contaminants in producing diesel, gasoline and jet fuel.

The injured were contractors who had been repairing the leak.
