HP Awards Best Petrochemical Technology Winner

Best Petrochemical Technology Finalists:

MCDERMOTT LUMMUS TECHNOLOGY, CDAlky® and Olefins Conversion Technology (OCT)

The company recently expanded two of its technology platforms (CDAlky® and OCT) to commercialize efficient alkylation of C5s in a novel reactor system or two-stage catalytic conversion of C5s to higher-value propylene employing catalytic distillation and metathesis via OCT. The CDAlky® sulfuric acid alkylation reactor design eliminates mechanical agitation with a unique patented reactor internals design that uses the fluid motive force for efficient mixing at lower temperatures, resulting in less acid consumption and superior alkylate properties. Catalytic distillation plus OCT is a two-stage system that utilizes catalytic distillation to tailor the feed mixture to the metathesis reactor to convert C5 olefins to high-value propylene.

RELIANCE INDUSTRIES LTD., Chlorinated Polyvinylchloride (CPVC) Production Technology

The company has developed a differentiated CPVC product, with superior mechanical and thermal properties, using an innovative and green PVC photochlorination process using visible light LEDs. Reliance’s visible blue light (460 nm) LED-mediated photo chlorination at large scale is distinguished and is a paradigm shift in photochemical processes. Conventional photochlorination conducted by UV lamp incurs many disadvantages, namely hazardous UV radiation, inefficiency, high power consumption, fragility and design flexibility. Reliance’s technology is composed of unique innovations to resolve the problems in the existing process and produce a superior product, with better economics.

SINOPEC, Ethylbenzene (EB) Production Technology

The company’s EB technology uses diluted ethylene—usually produced in a refinery as offgas and burned as a low-grade fuel—as a feedstock to produce ethylbenzene. The company can also use ethanol in the process. Compared to the traditional two-step dehydration and alkylation process, Sinopec’s EB technology is a one-step alkylation process that does not need an ethanol dehydration unit. The technology has been successfully tested and commercialized.

WINNER: CDAlky® and Olefins Conversion Technology, McDermott
