Pemex refinery continues operations, despite protests

Police and protesters clashed over the weekend when riot police were dispatched to end a seven-day demonstration and blockade of a major highway that connects Oaxaca to Mexico City.

Eight people were killed and 53 civilians were wounded in the scuffle. Police report that 55 officers were also injured. The protests were a response to education reforms that would alter the way teachers were evaluated.

Pemex officials released a statement Friday, June 17 warning that the refinery at Salina Cruz may be forced to cease operations if the protests continued to disrupt traffic along the Oaxaca-Puebla highway. The highway is used to transport fuel to and from the plant.

As of Monday, June 20, however, a Pemex spokesperson announced that the plant had continued operating at normal capacity throughout the weekend.
