Oman Oil Refineries and Petroleum Industries Co. (Orpic) recently awarded a pair of contracts for its Liwa Plastics industrial complex project located in Sohar, Oman.
CB&I, CTCI
A joint venture between CB&I and CTCI Corp. signed a contract valued at $2.8 billion to provide engineering, procurement and construction for the steam cracker package.
The scope of work includes EPC for a grassroots 880,000-tpy ethylene plant, pygas unit and MTBE unit, as well as all the related off-sites and utilities. CB&I's scope of work also includes the construction of cryogenic and atmospheric storage tanks and pipe spool fabrication.
As previously announced, the cracker will employ CB&I's latest, proven ethylene technology, including highly-selective SRT cracking heaters, and its innovative recovery section design, featuring low-pressure separation and mixed refrigeration.
"We look forward to continuing our strong relationship with Orpic and appreciate their confidence in our proven expertise and integrated offering, which includes technology, proprietary equipment, pipe fabrication and storage, as well as engineering, procurement and construction," said Philip K. Asherman, CB&I's president and CEO.
Maire Tecnimont
Maire Tecnimont announced that its subsidiary Tecnimont S.p.A. was awarded a contract for the realization of a polyethylene (PE) plant (HDPE/LLDPE) and a polypropylene plant (PP) on an EPC basis for a value of $895 million by Orpic.
This contract is one of the four packages forming the Liwa Plastics project (LPIC).
In order to finance the whole LPIC complex, which has an overall value of $6.4 billion, a credit line equal to $890 million is being currently finalized, disbursed by Cassa Depositi e Prestiti (CDP) and some commercial banks and fully guaranteed by Italian export credit company SACE.
The polyethylene and polypropylene units will be developed on the basis of PE Univation Technologies and PP Basell Poliolefine technology.
The projects scope of work includes the provision of complete engineering services, equipment and material supply and construction activities up to commissioning, start up and guarantee test run of:
- A polyethylene plant consisting of two swing units with a capacity of 880,000 tpy of high-density polyethylene (HDPE) and linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE);
- A polypropylene plant (PP) with a capacity of 300,000 tpy
The "notice to proceed" date is expected by March 2016, while the completion of the scope of work is expected in the fourth quarter of 2019.
The award in Oman enables Maire Tecnimont to expand its industrial footprint in the GCC region, the company says. This prestigious reference will also best position Maire Tecnimont in the Omani market, which is characterized by promising growth prospects in the hydrocarbon processing value chain.
We feel really honored to contribute to Omans industrial development with such a strategic initiative, enabling the country to produce polyethylene for the first time, which rates highest in the world in terms of global demand," said Pierroberto Folgiero, CEO of Maire Tecnimont. "This contract awarded to us by Orpic is sound evidence of our historical excellence in polyolefins.
