Wabash River coal-gasification project celebrates 20 years of operations

The Wabash River coal-gasification repowering project in West Terre Haute, Indiana recently celebrated two decades of commercial operation, technology developers announced this week.

CB&I’s E-Gas technology for coal and petcoke gasification is used in this pioneering integrated gasification combined cycle (IGCC) project.

The Wabash River IGCC project repowered an aging pulverized coal power plant with the installation of a gasification facility and new combined cycle, 262-megawatt power plant—demonstrating world class, low-level emissions for coal-fired power generation.

Coal was first gasified at the plant in late August of 1995. The overall IGCC plant completed performance testing and entered into commercial operation just over three months later in early December.

The overall permitting, design, construction and start-up of the project were completed in less than four years.

The Wabash River gasification plant has been owned by SG Solutions since 2005. CB&I says it is pleased to work with SG Solutions and contribute to the plant’s success by providing operations management and other professional services on site.
