Fire injures four at REG’s biorefinery in Louisiana

Renewable Energy Group (REG) reported that a fire occurred at approximately 12 a.m. local time on Friday morning at its biorefinery in Geismar, Louisiana.

The fire injured four people, REG reported, including one REG employee and three contractors. All are being treated at the Baton Rouge General Hospital.  The injuries are believed to be non-life threatening, according to several news reports.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with them and their families," REG said in a statement.

REG noted that emergency crews quickly responded to contain the fire, and it was declared completely extinguished by 4:20 a.m. Other plants in the area were put under "shelter in place" orders for several hours after the incident, but those have since been lifted.

All other employees on site have been accounted for, the company said.

REG did not comment on the cause of the fire, or any possible impact on production.
