BP plans layoffs at Texas City petrochemical plant

BP is planning to cut both hourly and salaried staff at its Texas City petrochemical complex in Texas, according to a report from news agency Reuters.

The layoffs will include 24 hourly and 12 salaried employees, equal to 15% of the plant's total workforce, Reuters reported.

A BP spokesman said the Texas City complex is shutting a paraxylene (PX) unit that has been idle for over a year due to market conditions and to make better use of resources.

Two other PX units will remain open in Texas City.

Reuters quoted a source as saying that the United Steelworkers (USW) union, which represents hourly workers at the plant, was challenging the layoffs of its members.
