USW staff at Marathon’s Galveston Bay refinery reject final contract offer

The United Steelworkers (USW) Union rejected Marathon Petroleum Corp.’s final contract offer for the Galveston Bay, Texas refinery.

The USW indicated that negotiations would resume on Monday, April 20 in an effort to end the 12-week strike that began on February 1.

According to the USW spokesperson, Marathon’s final offer could eliminate 150 jobs and have an impact on safety policies.

Earlier this week, LyondellBasell Industries made a final offer to its USW members, which was also rejected. In response, LyondellBasell has informed the union that the company would declare an impasse in the negotiations and impose their last offer beginning on April 20.

Under an impasse, the company can impose a set of work rules for employees to work under.
