Shintech commits to new US Gulf ethane cracker, contracts Toyo, CB&I

Shintech, a subsidiary of Japan-based Shin-Etsu Chemical Co., selected Toyo Engineering to construct a 500,000-tpy ethylene plant in Plaquemine, Louisiana.
The new facility will use the licensed ethylene technology by CB&I's Lummus Technology. The produced ethylene will be supplied as feedstock to Shintech’s existing PVC resin production facilities at the site.
The technology includes CB&I's highly selective SRT cracking heaters and its innovative recovery section design, featuring low pressure separation and mixed refrigeration to minimize investment costs.
Under a lump-sum turnkey contract, Toyo will provide engineering, procurement, construction and commissioning services for the new ethylene complex.
The Shintech ethylene project is the largest US project that Toyo will execute, and it is valued at $1.4 B. The new ethylene complex is estimated to be onstream in the first half of 2018.
Toyo has extensive experience in executing ethylene plant projects. This latest project is the 45th to be added to Toyo’s ethylene plant track record, following on from the Malaysian project announced in August 2014.
Expecting more investments related shale gas, Toyo says it remains pursuing further projects opportunities in the US market.
