Chile refinery fire injures two, shuts production

A fire on Tuesday at Empresa Nacional del Petroleo's (ENAP) Aconcagua refinery in Concon, Chile, injured two workers and halted production in five units, according to news reports.

An investigation is underway to examine the fire's cause, which for the moment remains unknown.

The fire occurred Tuesday morning in a pump in Topping Plant 2, according to a news release from the state-run company. The plant as well as four other units were then shut as a precaution, and the incident was resolved within the hour.

Two workers suffered minor injuries in the fire after being splashed by hot liquid.

The 104,000-bpd refinery has been undergoing planned maintenance since early October.

ENAP said it expects the refinery to return to full operation in early December, following conclusion of the maintenance and the fire-related shutdowns.
