Total may close steam cracker at French refinery

By DAVID PEARSON

PARIS -- Total may post this week about its shutting down a steam cracking unit at its refinery at Carling, on France's northeastern border with Germany, French newspaper Journal du Dimanche reports.

The newspaper says Total's management may inform labor representatives at a works council that it is converting the loss-making facility into the production of polystyrene, entailing some 200 job losses out of a total workforce of 500.

Total's Carling facility has suffered from chronic overcapacity in Europe.

No one from Total was immediately available for comment.
