Invista to expand aromatic polyester polyols plants in Netherlands, US

INVISTA Specialty Materials is investing several million dollars at its two Terate aromatic polyester polyols manufacturing sites in Wilmington, N.C., and Vlissingen, Netherlands, the company said on Wednesday.

The investments involve upgrades to boost global production volumes of the Terate HT polyols product line to help meet growing global demand for INVISTA’s aromatic polyester polyols, according to the company.

“Our customers are choosing our innovative Terate HT polyols because these products offer advances in ease of processing and efficiency in rigid foam manufacture, as well as improved adhesion to various substrates, including cold adhesion for spray applications,” said Bill Trowell, global business director for the product line.

At the same time, rigid foams containing the polyols retain many of the differentiated performance features of INVISTA’s traditional polyol offerings including high compressive strengths, high weight retention and high volume retention in fire and smoke testing, the company said.

“Customers have already experienced increased value in use with our HT technology and this investment will help ensure supply as more customers experience the benefits of these polyols,” said Trowell.

The chemistry that forms the basis for the Terate platform is the culmination of several years of research and development, customer trials and feedback, INVISTA said.

The result is the development of a series of polyols with improved overall performance compared with current aromatic polyester polyols in the marketplace, according to the company.

The polyols are used in a variety of applications, the company said, including polyurethane and polyisocyanurate foams as well as in coatings, adhesives, elastomers and sealants.
