Formosa shuts Taiwan styrene plant following fire

TAIPEI -- Formosa Chemicals & Fibre Corp. said Monday that it has shut a 300,000 tpy styrene monomer production plant in central Taiwan following a fire that broke out Sunday afternoon.
The facility, part of the company's flagship Mailiao petrochemical complex in Yunlin county, produces intermediate petrochemicals for other units under the Formosa Group and for other small local customers, Formosa Chemicals president Hong Fu-yuan told Dow Jones Newswires.
Mr. Hong said the shutdown, in order to conduct safety checks, may hit Formosa Chemicals' revenue in August, although he said the impact likely wouldn't be "too much."
He said the fire was extinguished within around half an hour after it started and he doesn't know when operations at the facility will be restarted.
The Mailiao complex has a total of three styrene monomer plants with a combined annual capacity of 1.2 million tons.
