Foster Wheeler inks engineering pact for UK fish oil processing plant

Foster Wheeler was awarded a contract by EPAX Pharma UK Ltd., the UK subsidiary of Norway’s Trygg Pharma, for the provision of engineering, procurement and construction management (EPCm) services.

The EPCm services will be used to convert parts of the former Lundbeck pharmaceutical plant at Seal Sands, Teesside, UK, to process fish oil to produce an omega-3 active pharmaceutical ingredient.

The contract value was not disclosed and will be included in the company’s second-quarter 2012 bookings.

Foster Wheeler’s role as the EPCm contractor includes detailed design, procurement and contracts management on behalf of EPAX, and also the provision of project, construction, pre-commissioning and validation management services.

This award extends Foster Wheeler’s involvement in the project, which commenced with basic engineering in the third-quarter of 2011, followed by front-end engineering design.

Operational qualification of the converted facility is scheduled for the first-quarter of 2013.

Foster Wheeler was first involved in the Seal Sands facility when, in 2000, it was awarded a contract by Lundbeck to design and build a bulk pharmaceutical facility on an ultra-fast-track schedule of 21 months.

Foster Wheeler’s scope of work at the time included front-end engineering, which was executed from its UK-headquartered operation in Reading, with its Teesside operation undertaking the EPCm and validation/commissioning services.
