Forecasters predict mild Atlantic hurricane season, low risk to energy operations

By STEVE GELSI

Forecasters at Colorado State University on Wednesday predicted a milder-than-average US hurricane season in the Atlantic this coming summer and fall.

The team at CSU expects 10 named storms during the hurricane season between June 1 and Nov. 30. There were 19 named Atlantic storms in 2011, including seven hurricanes and three major hurricanes

They calculated a 42% chance that at least one major hurricane will make landfall in the US, compared to the long-term probability of 52%.

Energy and insurance companies keep close watch on hurricane forecasts because of the impact the storms have on oil and gas output from the Gulf of Mexico, as well as claims from flooding and heavy rains.
