Netherlands opens first LNG terminal in Rotterdam
The Netherlands on Friday opened its first liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal in Maasvlakte near Rotterdam, proceeding with plans to become a regional gas distribution hub.
The Rotterdam LNG terminal was built by SENER and Techint Engineering and Construction, integrated under the joint venture TS LNG.
Paolo Bigi, CEO of Techint, said: This has been a very significant achievement and a very successful test for the cooperation between Techint E&C and SENER. We trust that this project will be a strong basis for new LNG terminals around the world and for further opportunities in other fields.
Jorge Unda, managing director of SENER, added: Without a doubt, TS LNG participation in this key European plant reflects its position as a company specializing in the natural gas sector.
LNG is frequently used as a power source in Europe and Asia.
The Gate terminal has a throughput capacity of 12 billion cubic meters, and can be expanded to 16 billion cubic meters.
The Rotterdam terminal is operated by tank storage firm Royal Vopak and state-run gas grid operator Nederlandse Gasunie, according to news reports.
Each of those firms holds a 42.5% stake, while Dong Energy, E.ON and Econogas each own 5% shares.
