Technip wins design deal for Qatargas refinery expansion

Technip has won the design contract for a capacity-doubling expansion of Qatargas’ Laffan condensate refinery, officials said on Friday.

France-based Technip will design facilities to raise output to 292,000 bpd, up from 146,000 bpd. The value of the front-end engineering and design deal was not disclosed.

The design work should be completed in the first quarter of 2012, and Qatargas expects to award the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) deal by the end of the 2012 third quarter.

The expansion project is expected to be complete in 2016, and will allow Qatargas to export naphtha, diesel, liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) and kerosene, said CEO Khalid Bin Khalifa Al-Thani.

The Laffan refinery started operations in September 2009.
