Shaw awarded EPC deal for US nuclear plant
The Shaw Group was awarded a contract by an affiliate of American Electric Power (AEP) to provide plant life-cycle management services for the Cook nuclear plant in Bridgman, Mich.
The contract, which was signed in the 2011 second quarter, follows a detailed feasibility study conducted by Shaw earlier this year for potential life-cycle management upgrades and modifications to the plant.
Shaw will provide engineering, procurement and construction services on approved projects designed to extend the life cycle of major components to ensure operation of the plant for 20 more years, it said.
“While many US utilities are contemplating ordering new nuclear power plants, life extension modifications to the existing operating fleet will remain a robust business opportunity,” said Clarence Ray, chief executive officer of Shaw’s power group. “Shaw has the experience and is ready to provide similar plant improvement services to clients across the nuclear industry.”
The undisclosed value of the contract was included in Shaw’s power segment’s backlog of unfilled orders in the second quarter of fiscal year 2011.
