Praxair inks hydrogen supply deal for Motiva refinery in Louisiana

Reinforcing its strategy to meet growing customer demand in the Mississippi River corridor, Praxair said it signed a long-term agreement with Motiva to supply hydrogen to Motiva’s Norco refinery in Louisiana.

Praxair recently announced plans to extend its existing Louisiana hydrogen pipeline complex by connecting it to a new hydrogen plant that is being constructed in St. Charles Parish, also where the Norco refinery is located.

The pipeline extension is scheduled to be in operation during the second quarter of 2012 and the plant in the fourth quarter of 2012.

Hydrogen is used by petroleum refiners to produce ultra-low-sulfur diesel and other transportation fuels.

Demand for these fuels continues to increase in order to comply with environmental regulations, Praxair said.

Financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed. Motiva has 234,700 bpd of capacity at its Norco refinery, according to the US Energy Information Administration (EIA).
