Gazprom, Japan consortium to evaluate building new LNG plant in Russia

Russian gas giant Gazprom and the Japan Far East Gas Co. consortium signed an agreement to conduct a feasibility study for a gas liquefaction plant (LNG plant) and gas-chemical complex near Vladivostok, Russia.

The study will also investigate opportunities for executing a pilot project on natural gas compression near Vladivostok for further marine transportation needs, the companies said.

“The feasibility study will make an important contribution in building up natural gas deliveries from Russia to Asia-Pacific countries by Gazprom in future as well as in reliable energy supply to Japan,” said Alexander Ananenkov, deputy chairman of Gazprom’s management committee.

The companies aim to complete the study by the end of the year, according to the Wall Street Journal. The plant would have a capacity of 10m metric tons/year of LNG, the Journal reported.

The Japanese consortium includes Itochu Corp. and its Japan Petroleum Exploration Co. unit, as well as Marubeni Corp. and Inpex Corp.
