BASF reaches climate protection goal

Last year, BASF reduced specific greenhouse gas emissions by 29% compared with 2002.  This means that the company reached its emissions goal pathway for 2020 for the first time.

A report issued today details the achievement of this climate protection goal and further explains BASF’s goals in the realms of economic, ecological and social aspects. The publication meets the internationally recognized Standards of Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) for sustainability reporting. The independent institution reaffirmed maximum transparency for the fourth time in succession, issuing an A+ rating.

The report documents BASF’s entrepreneurial performance and shows how sustainability contributes to corporate success. BASF measures its performance on the basis of clearly defined targets for the three areas economy, ecology and society.  In 2010, BASF says it earned a premium on its cost of capital with a premium of €3.5 billion. The proportion of senior managers with international experience rose to 78%.

BASF is currently working on new goals for the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and is continuously enhancing its reporting on greenhouse gas emissions. For the first time in 2010, BASF takes into account the newly drafted standard of the greenhouse gas protocol for reporting emissions along the value-adding chain. BASF has contributed its know-how to the development of this new standard elaborated by international sustainability experts. The new guidelines aim for more transparency and conformity in corporate carbon reporting.

The result of BASF’s corporate carbon footprint for 2010 includes significant reductions in greenhouse gas emissions from its own production and a reduction in its customers’ CO2-footprint by 322 million tons through climate protection solutions.

Last year, for the tenth time running, the company was listed in the Dow Jones Sustainability Index and tops the materials sector of the prestigious Carbon Disclosure Leadership Index. In addition, BASF is listed in the new Carbon Performance Leadership Index (CPLI).
