Refinery explosion in Oklahoma, no injuries reported

Gary-Williams Energy Co. suffered an explosion and fire yesterday at its refinery in Wynnewood, Oklahoma.

Bloomberg interviewed the county’s director of emergency management, who had this to say:

“There was small explosion, then a fire,” Bud Ramming, Garvin County director of emergency management said in a telephone interview.  “For a few hours this morning, we blocked off about a half a mile of road on highway 77 just as a precautionary measure.”

According to The Oklahoman, this is the fourth fire at the refinery in four years. In May 2006, explosions and fires at the refinery caused the evacuation of about 150 residents. About a week later, a fire-related acid leak caused more evacuations. In April 2007, a lightning bolt struck the refinery and caused a fire that burned for several days. In February 2008, a furnace caught fire and burned for two hours.
