Black & Veatch-patented technology featured in Asia’s largest natural gas plant

Black & Veatch is providing its patented interstage cooling technology at the Puguang natural gas plant in Sichuan Province, China.  The plant is expected to supply energy to Shanghai.

The Puguang natural gas plant will process up to 36 million normal cubic meters of raw natural gas per day. Black & Veatch provided process design engineering, technology licensing and field support services as part of a complete sour gas purification and sulfur recovery scheme.

“Raw natural gas from the Puguang field is considered sour because it contains large volumes of hydrogen sulfide in addition to having an appreciable carbon dioxide content,” said Angela Slavens, manager of sulfur technologies for Black & Veatch’s global energy business. “Black & Veatch’s technology is one of the key features of the design that enables us to significantly reduce the volume of these impurities, while maximizing sales gas volume for our client.”

The processing plant removes virtually all hydrogen sulfide, which makes up nearly 15% of the raw gas volume, and converts it to elemental sulfur. It also reduces carbon dioxide content from 10% to 3%  of total volume.
