NASCAR star promotes safety at refinery appearance

Coming off his win at the Sylvania 300 and being catapulted to second place in the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup, Clint Bowyer knows safety precautions are essential for every job and workplace, from refineries to race tracks.

Earlier this summer, Mr. Bowyer was a guest speaker at a safety luncheon at the ConocoPhillips Wood River refinery in Roxana, Illinois. Mr. Bowyer is also the safety spokesperson of Scheck Industries, a contractor working on the refinery’s expansion also adept in the fields of power and process piping, pipe and modular fabrication, instrumentation, HVAC and boiler services.

With more than 1,300 craft workers onsite, the project’s contractors have put in more than 3 million work hours to date. The safety luncheon was coordinated by ConocoPhillips, Cenovus Energy, Bechtel OIL, GAS and Chemicals, Inc., and Scheck Industries.

Following the safety talk, Bowyer answered questions from the audience. Later, he signed hard hats, t-shirts and memorabilia for the CORE Project employees. Bowyer’s #33 Cheerios car was on display during the luncheon for the workers to examine up close.

Wood River refinery is currently undergoing one of the largest refinery expansions in the US and the biggest refinery expansion in ConocoPhillips’ history. Upon completion in 2011, this project will elevate the refinery, currently the 10th largest in America with a capacity of 306,000 bpd, to the sixth largest at 356,000 bpd.
