KBR and Saudi Kayan startup grassroots cracker
KBR has announced the startup of a 1.35 million metric tpy steam cracker at Saudi Kayan Petrochemical Co.s (Saudi Kayan) olefins plant located in Saudi Kayans petrochemical complex in Al-Jubail, Saudi Arabia. KBR executed the engineering, procurement and construction management of the cracker.
The unit started up successfully with on-specification ethylene being produced at the end of July 2010. The cracker, which utilizes KBRs selective cracking optimum recovery (SCORE) technology, currently feeds predominately butane and ethane with total final products (ethylene, propylene and benzene) totaling 2.1 million tpy, making it one of the largest crackers in the world. The Saudi Kayan petrochemical complex will cater to high value sectors of the polyethylene, polypropylene and ethylene glycol markets and will introduce high value added products and derivatives such as polycarbonate and amines for the first time in Saudi Arabia.
Building on KBRs legacy of innovation, the successful start-up of the Saudi Kayan steam cracker exemplifies KBRs broad scope of capabilities in large-scale project execution and industry-leading technology, said John Quinn, president, KBR Downstream. KBR takes great pride in delivering quality services and technologies to its customers across the globe.
